Deptford's population of over 30,000 continues to grow and is close enough to major cities like Philadelphia and Atlantic City to benefit from their economic stimulus, yet far enough away to provide a sense of remove. Deptford is a prime location to develop a balanced life between work and play. Formed as a township in 1695, Deptford was once 106 square miles and included West Deptford. Today, the township is less than 18 square miles, but that area is filled with amazing and distinctive neighborhoods and a community that embodies a social spirit. Named after a small town in England, Deptford has been a traditional melting pot of a vast array of settlers from a variety of different culture which still leave an undeniable imprint. One of Deptford’s claims to fame is its place in the country’s history in air mail delivery. In 1973, Jean-Pierre Blanchard carried a personal letter from George Washington and landed in Deptford from his hot air balloon flight that left Philadelphia. A hot air balloon is now Deptford’s logo and is located on various signs throughout the township. Today, Deptford boasts 17 beautiful parks, and richly historic neighborhoods like Almonesson, Jericho, New Sharon, Oak Valley, Westville Grove, Cooper Village, Blackwood Terrace, Hammond Heights, Lake Tract, Woodbury Terrace, Woodbury Gardens, Country Club Estates and Good Intent. The Deptford Mall compliments shopping districts located in Woodbury, Blackwood and Westville. West Deptford, was formed in 1871 and its location along the Delaware River and short distance to Philadelphia has attracted leading companies such as Sunoco and Johnson-Matthey to call it home. West Deptford’s population of nearly 20,000 is renowned for its strong work ethic and focus on the future. With a great infrastructure for future business growth, West Deptford has devoted much of its energies into maintaining a vibrant recreational scene with a variety of programs sure to please everyone. Various theaters, pageant programs, concert series, parks and sports programs are available throughout the year for the public to join and enjoy. |
